[ Kanaya just gives him a sly smile, cocking an eyebrow as she follows him inside. ]
Josuke, this is an entirely hypothetical discussion! There are no mutant reptiles that will leap out to attack us if we visit their enclosure. If there were, then of course it would be a scenario in which I would "gotta".
And I wouldn't hesitate to! That will be my job to her. Yes, it is also my job to survive for her, but I've never met an animal who would make that any sort of consideration.
[ She looks ahead from the entrance, seeing the flamingos ring, watching them play in the water. ]
Though at least it wouldn't be sharks, this time. Look at that!
[Lazy little wave to the camera, tucking a strand of her now much-shorter hair behind her ear. She's exhausted, still recovering from the past week at home and being brought back here, squaring a year of memories she'd lost with three years at home, and three missing weeks...
[ Kanaya looks tired, but at least she's back to being herself. Still, she just came out of a hell of a week, and signs of fatigue haven't quite cleared from her features. She narrows her eyes slightly, with just a hint of suspicion.
She can't be sure this will mean anything good. ]
Marceline. I see you've returned. How can I help you?
Yeah. Three years back in Ooo. [Ssssigh.] Listen. That whole talk we had before-- You know, about the fledglings? There's some stuff I didn't tell you.
[ She should have guessed, she didn't end up being as much of a help in their recovery as Kanaya had hoped. If she was as experienced as Kanaya had thought, there would have been something for her to offer. But then, that could've just been irresponsibility.
Maybe it's both. ]
Just you. Not a single other? So then...what makes you the queen?
[ She lets out a groan, pressing the heels of her palms in her eyes. ]
Not without going through me, first.
[ And does that mean she couldn't pull that off? Kanaya isn't sure. But if she had to die, that would be the best one she's had yet. ]
I just. Thought I might have had one ally in this. Between everyone who either thinks Matthews did nothing wrong, or that the fledglings are monsters who shouldn't be allowed to survive. The only thing anyone agrees on is that I'm obviously the villain!
[uuugh. Marceline puts her head in her hands, looking down for a second.]
They're not monsters, and you're not the bad guy here! Matthews messed up, bad. They need all the help they can get. [And she knows what it's like to be scared and alone with a curse she never asked for. She means what she's said again and again, the fledglings are harmless. With the guidance and help they're getting.]
[ Kanaya takes a deep breath, trying to sort everything out. Be rational about this, Kanaya, think it out. It's been a touchy subject from the start, but what is Marceline actually saying here? It doesn't necessarily change anything, it's the past, not the future. ]
