Not...quite. I've just been lucky, for the most part. Every time I've left a universe, every time I had the fortune that a method provided itself for me to leave, that universe was dying.
Though perhaps there isn't any good fortune in having seen so many of them die in my short lifetime.
It's more likely than you think. Universes are dying and giving birth all the time. Sometimes you just might be unfortunate enough to reside in one as it does.
The first time it was through a game, which wasn't actually a game at all. More of a complex magical ritual that facilitated our universe's reproductive process. It wanted to keep its agents alive so we could complete the work.
The second time, the Porter pulled as many of us as she could out. That's how we first came to this world.
Well, we all had somewhere else. The first was my homeworld, before it died. And Lachesis has been at this for longer than on just this world, we have perhaps a dozen of us left who were on the last one.
You mean the government? They don't control the imPort stuff?
[ Honestly, he'd kind of already figured that out based on the sheer fact that they don't send people home as punishment, get rid of criminals and dissenters. But he's fishing, since it seems like she knows a lot about this stuff and it's the kind of thing you can't just ask anyone. Not when you're as paranoid and socially anxious as Elliot, anyway. ]
[ Lucky for him, she's exactly the person people tend to ask this kind of thing, because she's the person most willing to give answers. They may not be as scientifically vetted as any answers Tony Stark or Peter Parker might have, but sometimes it helps to have it all in layman's terms.
Even when they can be overly wordy layman's terms. ]
not in the least the porter controls herself none of this would make any kind of sense otherwise
thats one of the main reasons i cant begrudge the whole registration process its just their way of trying to exercise some control over a situation that was thrust on them the same way we try to do ourselves everyones been dealt a shitty hand and trying to find some benefit from it
In my world stuff like this is always just an exercise by the mega corporations and other people in power to continue to trap people into a cycle of debt and distraction. Using superhero arrivals to entertain the masses while simultaneously profiting off indebted labor for the low price of basic necessities. And knowing they know all our information and have the power to make calls based on that kind of concerned me from the start. So I guess not registering was kind of a refusal to approve of that system.
But I don't know. The capitalism and the us vs them nationalism is the same but they genuinely seem to want to help.
they dont have all of our information you might be surprised to learn that the copy they give you is all the porter gives them i used to know someone who hacked their database to confirm it
but i do thing the presentation of the whole thing is certainly flawed many of us very understandably arent inclined to believe them when they explain the situation there isnt really anything they can say to assuage that at all i think the responsibility may rest more on the shoulders of those of us who have already lived through it we have the experience to correct where initial impressions and reality dont quite meet
not that many imports dont still cling to those initial impressions anyway even after years of those fears never coming to fruition i hardly think theyre perfect and i dont think they really know what theyre doing half the time or how to even deal with having us here but i dont think they mean us any harm
[ For the New Year, Kanaya receives a package of homemade candles smelling of green tea and lemongrass in addition to a woven, jade-green table runner... and a little knitted scarf for the cutest bug in town. ]
Happy holidays, Kanaya! I have maade most jewerly, but I believed that mine may not be to your taste, so instead, I have made you a decoration. And, of course, a wrap for Ashiah. I do not know if she ever gets chilly, but I do know that she would look very cute in it, as she does in everything.
As always, thank you for your support and friendship, down to the very first day that we had met. You have always been a strong presence here, and, I think, an even stronger mother.
May the new year treat you with the kindness you deserve.
[ Kaneki only celebrates New Years, so that's the day he'll be dropping off gifts. For Kanaya, he will leave incense, home-made mochi (rice cakes - that's mostly for Ashiah, though he doesn't know if she can eat those), and a bottle of bloodwine - as well a note ]

Kanaya Maryam, I presume? My name is Seymour Guado...I do hope my timing isn't inconvenient.
You see...I was referred to you by another imPort, one by the name of Normie Osborn who informed me that you might be able to assist me with my present wardrobe situation.
