No accusation has been leveled toward him, but you're good at finding handy ways of dismissing information that's available when it's something that I've concluded. Or filed away. Holiday doesn't say things lightly, even if he dislikes the man in question. Think about it.
And I think it was in my favor, but it still set me back. There's a lot up in the air. For all we know, Narga has files upon files of information as to why the government is the real problem. Or maybe he's lost a blowhorn. Either way, I don't need lessons on handling a delicate situation from you when I've already chosen not to charge in with guns blazing (or arrows shot).
[ kanaya thinks of it in opposite terms. cloth is more precious, more costly. more often, it's employed solely for aesthetics. so, it's with some minor reluctance that she accepts the handkerchief, wiping her nose quickly but resisting the impulse to blow it to ensure all dog saliva is gone. even if the action wouldn't be inappropriate from a proper young woman like herself, she'd hate to soil the cloth more than she has to.
carefully folding it, she sets it down on the table, followed by her characteristically oversized purse, slipped off of her shoulder. hands free and nose seen to, she finally puts her focus on the harness, the problem readily apparent. ]
The stitching here must have torn out. Something like this would have been done in mass on an assembly line, it was probably a poor job to begin with. But not too complicated a fix. Better than the nylon tearing.
[ so she pulls out a chair and digs into her purse, first removing a needle kit before weighing between two spools of thick thread. she brought black and white both because she wasn't sure the color of the harness. to match the existing thread, she opts for the black. ]
[ she misunderstood what rose meant about norman being forthcoming, and opened her mouth to say something about it before realizing that of course she should let her finish. the whioole of it has been an exercise in deceit, nothing rose has been presented with in her time with the plot has been as advertised, and of course she knows it. but norman hasn't been acing directly. if he wants someone to watch rose, he'd keep his hands clean.
but that hobgoblin watches her casts a more sinister light on her own outlandish theory: that he was created as the opposition. if he watches rose, he may be looking for an opportunity. this could be very dangerous. ]
That is what I meant by bait, actually. You see, I've been in contact with Spider-Man already. You remember the first article, about a month ago, this Hobgoblin seemed to pay no heed to opposition from the police. He ignored them outright, aside from clearing them away from whatever tantrum he seemed to be showing. A tantrum maybe, or a show.
The moment Spider-Man arrived, he became the focus of the Hobgoblin's attention. I thought we might be able to take advantage of that, to assume he may be interested in seeking him out again later. And should he not, Spider-Man certainly would.
If I could be there, and see him, I may be able to trace his thread to learn his identity. But it's been a month now and nothing has come of it.
[ she brushes her fingers along rose's forearm. ] Perhaps I should have been accompanying you, instead.
[ if rose is in danger from hobgoblin, what kind of girlfriend would she be if she made her face it alone? what good is she if she can't protect against that sort of threat? ]
[ Kanaya... cloth is so much more water friendly. Then again, Annie's relationship to cloth is one about functionality and use and durability - proper care of material as far as her world standards is automatic. No one liked freezing; tears were mended, patched, and when clothing was so worn to be beyond wearability, the rags were reused until they, too, were falling apart.
People who could afford to let cloth only be decorative were the ones running things; or the ones just comfortable enough that they didn't worry about rags worn in winter and the frostbite that may result. They aren't the refugees, but... it doesn't take so much guess work to suspect Kanaya may feel differently.
Especially with such careful folding. Annie's attention falls back on the harness as Kanaya speaks, making a thoughtful noise. ]
Assembly line... that's part of what came out of the idea of factory work. Which is how many of the goods in stores today are made, if I understand things correctly. Machine made rather than hand-made?
[ Faulty machines, leading to mistakes a human eye might have picked up? Regardless, a (not so) human eye (discounting the semantics) has picked up on them now. ]
Rex, can you find your ball?
[ She doesn't expect the puppy to reply, but she does expect to direct his attention. He stops attempting to lick at Kanaya's feet for long enough to perk up, still at the word ball, then to look around like some object's been thrown. He trots around in a circle, tongue lolling out, head coming down low as he looks for the object of his play affections. Annie moves past him into the living room proper, having seen one of the two balls lodged partway under the chair earlier. It might still be there, depending on what Rex was up to when she'd been mulling over a problem from her math book.
Granted, after her tutors this summer, she's not really stymied by the mathematics like she'd been at the start of her time here, where even the words were enough to make her grit her teeth.
Familiarity sure breeds something. (Other than headaches. Give her a good, physical review any day over this paper testing...) ]
[This entire mess is Rose's mistake to fix. She holds Kanaya's eyes for a long moment, her expression entirely serious. ]
I mean it. I appreciate all you're doing to help me, Kanaya, but please don't put yourself out there. I don't what I'd do if something were to happen to you.
[She swallows, clutching her mug with both hands now. Her knuckles turn white; after a long moment, she glances away and considers what she's learned. If Hobgoblin's interested in Spider-Man and Green Goblin almost exclusively, Norman does seem like the likely suspect. She tries very hard not to feel offended. ]
I think I should speak to him anyway.
[She takes a long sip of her tea and then, almost conversationally: ]
Could you confirm Spider-Man's identity, if we were to lure them both out? Or, one of them at least?
Im Not Dismissing It I Just Said It Cant Be Dismissed What Im Saying Is It Shouldnt Be Taken As The Primary Likelihood Before Corroborating Information Is Found That We Keep Possibilities In Mind But Dont Let Them Cloud Our Judgement
The Fact That Youve Actually Made A Discreet Choice This Once Isnt Something I Can Or Should Take For Granted Frankly Im Surprised It Can Actually Happen
[ it's a troubling cost of the industry that allows for the lifestyles available in the current time, makes kanaya's trade as viable as it does. easy, cheap production brings down cost, makes dog harnesses easy to afford. but sometimes it throws quality out the window.
she loops her thread into the needle and fits the strap back through the clasp, then begins threading. it isn't as quick as she was when she made the hoodie, not in her human form, but the job is nowhere near as ambitious. ]
Well, machine and hand have other connotations in my line of work. But a machine stitch guided by a machine is just...a bit exponential from the hand-stitching I'm doing now. They're meant to be exact, but this one must have slipped through quality control.
[ she looks over her should the see where rex has gone, just in time to see him come in and drop the ball down at her with expectant eyes. she whimpers quietly at him. the sooner she's done, the sooner they can play again. ]

[ she doesn't give the question any attention, more preoccupied with what precedes it. she won't let a casual tone change the subject so easily, not that subject. her hand drops to her own thigh, lips curling into a pout. ]
And what am I to do if something happens to you? What am I good for then? I don't fear danger, Rose, certainly not when it's for you. I'm built to withstand it.
Let me do at least this, inadequate as it is.

I Made A Calendar Once To Calculate Them For Everyone I Knew At The Time Accounting For Any Desynchronization In Equivalent Dates When They Were Wherever It Is They Originally Were Brought From Earth Has Shorter Years Than We Do But Mine Came Out Ultimately To May 15
Why
[ by an alternian calendar, she just turned 8 last friday. annie shouldn't know this, kanaya hasn't really made it too well know, but she's suspicious nonetheless. ]
[ annie has no idea, she just has a birthday agenda she's finally getting around to, which involves many painful text messages sent out to people whom she'd like to send a letter saying happy birthday as a gesture that "it's nice to know you are alive and well and potentially thriving right now."
no one has said gifts are mandatory so she's totally set with her letters okay ]
Because I didn't know if you did, or what your birthday would be on this calendar. Now I do. Thank you.

Not Your Fault On The Lateness I Dont Generally Tend To Advertise It Only Really Matters In A Concrete Way To One Other Person
17 Is An Odd One So Far Not Really Young Any Longer But Not Nearly Old Enough By This Worlds Laws Either At Least Next Year Buying Cigarettes Will Be Easier
It's still something I'm... glad to acknowledge. May the next sweep be a bearable one, with happier moments where you can find them.
17 shouldn't be an age that matters. Neither should 18, but this time next year I'll at least be out of high school, as long as I don't fail all examinations this year. Cigarettes are... cigarettes. I'd prefer a halfway decent shitty ale.
